This painting is an homage to California Plein Air painter John Gamble who had an early influence on Dudley's paintings. This painting is oil on canvas framed in a gold leaf arts and crafts frame.
James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953 in Jackson, Mississippi. Slay began his formal instruction at the New England School of Design. He briefly attended the Otis Art Institute in Pasadena, California. He followed this with personal tutoring from Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart. He also studied with Karl Dempwolf and Frank Serrano at the California Art Club.
His specialty is painting in the plein air tradition and in his studio. His works can be found in private collections nationwide and in permanent display at the American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk, Kamechatka Russia. He has exhibited in juried art shows across the state.
