The artist was born in Buffalo, New York 4/24/1885. He died 10/15/1955 in Los Angeles, California.
Herbert Sartelle had a colorful career having run away to the Barnam & Bailey Circus as a stage hand, set painter and magician.
In 1909 he worked with Rogers and Hammerstein in New York and worked the RKO circuit. After leaving show business in the late 1920's until his death he traveled the California state painting desert scenes and seascapes.
He was a highly skilled artist who was able to capture the lupines and poppies of the purple mountains and desert plus the Monterey Peninsula. He retired in Palm Springs .

This lovely small painting shows the crashing seas. It is in good condition with one blem on the canvas and a couple of nicks to the original frame.
